Batteries

The John W. Hock Company carries three types of batteries which have different chemistries (lead-acid, non-rechargeable alkaline, and lithium-ion).

  1. Gel-cell lead-acid batteries come with outputs of 6 or 12 VDC and have various sizes depending on the capacity in AmpHrs. All of our chargers are automatic meaning they taper the charge as the battery becomes charged so as to not dry the battery out or overheat it.
    We have various types of chargers for these batteries including a 30 wt. solar charger that can be used with both 6 and 12 VDC batteries (autosensing voltage).
    We have 6- and 12-chargers that use as input any voltage between 90 and 240 VAC and 50/60 HZ so they can be used in virtually any country in the world. 
  2. Single-use (i.e. non-rechargeable) alkaline batteries in sizes D-cell, AA-cell, and 9-volt. We have trap-mounted D-cell holders and a waterproof battery holder that has four D-cells in series; both of these holders output 6 VDC.
  3. Lithium-ion batteries and holder. The holder contains four 18650 protected Li-ion batteries and outputs 7 AmpHrs at 7.4 VDC. The ratio of weight to AmpHrs of these batteries is outstanding.  Currently, the only trap using Li-ion batteries is the new Stealth Trap, PN 2014 which can accept any voltage between 4 and 24 volts.

The 6 Volt Rechargeable Batteries are sealed gelled-electrolyte batteries available in different capacities for use with our 6 volt products.

The 12 Volt Rechargeable Batteries are sealed gelled-electrolyte batteries available in different capacities for use with our 12 volt products.

 

The Model 1.50 Holder for 4 D-Cell Batteries.Single-Use Batteries and Battery Holders

For those who desire the convenience of disposable batteries, you can use the D Cell Battery Holder available in two styles. The 4 D-cells can be used with all of our 6 volt traps and provides enough capacity for 1 or 2 night’s operations, depending on trap and battery type.

 

Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries and Battery Holder

The Lithium-Ion 18650 Protected Batteries, Set of Four, Model 2.10.  Our batteries are manufactured in Japan and include a built-in protector designed by Seiko. The protector circuit prevents over discharge (activated at 2.45 VDC), over charge (activated at 4.92 VDC), and limits maximum to 10 Amps, far more than required by the Stealth Trap, Model 2014. The chemistry is the latest design using Li-ion hybrid technology. This comes in a set of four batteries held in the Li-ion battery case (PN: 1.40) and requires a Li-ion battery charger like our Model 2.00; the charger outputs 3.4 Amps per hour at 8.4 VDC.

We have specific chargers that work well with 6 or 12 volt gelled-electrolyte batteries. For extended field applications, our solar powered battery charger can replenish the power used the previous night.

6- and 12-Volt Lead-Acid Battery Chargers

The 6- and 12- Volt Battery Chargers (PN 2.92-6-90-240 and PN 2.70, respectively) are both fully regulated and can automatically charge our lead acid batteries; the input voltage is 110-220 VAC, 50/60 Hz so they can be operated in virtually every country of the world. These chargers have a two-speed cooling fan and three LEDs to indicate power on/off, bulk charging, tapering charging, and fully charged.  

 

Auto-Sensing 6- and 12-Volt 30-Wt Solar-Powered Lead-Acid Battery ChargerAuto-Sensing 6- and 12-Volt 30-Wt Solar-Powered Lead-Acid Battery Charger

Our 6- and 12-Volt Lead-Acid PWM Solar Charger (PN 2.55) is a fully-regulated and auto-sensing commercial photovoltaic module designed to recharge 6 and 12 volt lead acid batteries with capacities in the range of 10 or more amps.  The waterproof (IP67) solar controller automatically senses the battery voltage and produces the correct voltage to use.  

 

8.4-Volt Li-ion Battery Charger2.00 Li-ion charger

The 8.4 Volt Battery Charger (PN 2.00) is fully regulated and can automatically charge our 8.4 VDC lithium-ion battery holder (PN 1.40) with a set of four Li-ion batteries (18650, PN 2.10); the input voltage is 110-220 VAC, 50/60 Hz so it can be operated in virtually every country of the world. This charger has a two-speed cooling fan and three LEDs to indicate power on/off, bulk charging, tapering charging, and fully charged. The output plug is designed to plug directly into the battery input plug on the new Stealth Trap (PN 2014).  Model 2.00 and Model 1.40 Manual.

                         8.4-Volt Li-ion Solar-Powered Battery Charger

The 8.4-Volt Solar-Powered PWM Battery Charger (PN 2.65) is fully regulated and can automatically charge our 8.4 VDC lithium-ion battery holder (PN 1.40) with a set of four Li-ion batteries (18650, PN 2.10).  The charger is waterproof (IP67).   Its dimensions are approximately 26- x 16- x  1-inch and weighs 8 lbs.  The solar photovoltaic (PV) panel is made of a glass laminate (glass/EVA/TPT (tedlar/pet/tedlar) or TPE).  The front side is made of high-transmission 3.2mm low-iron tempered glass.  The back side of the panel is made of  TPT/TPE.  The frame is made of clear anodized aluminum.  Under full sun this charger will give an output of 30 watts.  

 

NOTE:  The Improved Aerosol Droplet Sampler (Model 212), the Modified CDC Backpack Aspirator (Model 1412), and the Improved Prokopack Aspirator (Model 1419) units come supplied with an appropriately-sized battery and charger. See product descriptions and instructions sheets for details.

 

Test Instruments

We recommend that every surveillance program has a basic multimeter for trouble shooting problems in the field and laboratory. In the majority of instances, when someone calls in about an issue with our traps, chargers, solar panels, or batteries, if they have this multicenter the item can be diagnosed by users and the correct parts can be sent out. We recommend everyone has a meter as it pays for itself the first time you do not need to send the entire unit back for repairs.

Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter

Our Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter (PN: 9.09) is an auto-ranging digital multimeter that measures AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current, and resistance. It also measures temperature, capacitance, frequency, duty-cycle, and tests diodes and audible continuity.
